Modern Foreign Languages

The Intent of the MFL Curriculum at St Luke’s C of E School is to provide opportunities for all pupils to learn and to achieve in their language learning:

  • Most students will experience learning of both French and Spanish to enable them to make an informed choice for study at GCSE.
  • Students will have opportunities to build their cultural knowledge of French and Spanish speaking nations through the use of authentic texts and TL films/cartoons.
  • Students will improve their understanding of grammatical terminology to help their understanding of other languages (and their own).
  • Students will have the opportunity to attend extra-curricular clubs and competitions to support their language learning.
  • Students will be prepared to transition from KS3 to KS4 with the skills and knowledge required to excel in KS4.
  • Understand the culture and customs of other nationalities.

The intent of our curriculum is implemented through:

  • Quality first teaching.
  • Highly focused lesson design with high demands for all students.
  • Appropriate use of teacher questioning, modelling and explaining.
  • Regular use of encouragement and praise to motivate students.
  • Regular quizzing and testing to identify gaps in knowledge.
  • Appropriate intervention for underperforming students.
  • Consistent approaches in teaching across all MFL classrooms.
  • At KS3 use of evidence based research to inform planning and teaching (NCELP Hub Project).
  • At KS4 use of model answers to promote high achievement for all students.
The main impact of our curriculum implementation will be seen in the quality and breadth of students’ work through their workbooks and in their assessment at each cycle.  As a department we are continuing to raise the aspirations and achievements of every student to ensure they make more than expected rates of progress across both KS3 and KS4.
The big questions

The big questions posed by our curriculum are:

  • How and why do languages evolve over time (impact of invasion/war)?
  • Why are there differences in cultures between people who speak different languages?
  • Why is it important to understand different languages in order to understand a different culture?
  • What makes a good friend/family member?
  • What impact do we have (globally) on the environment?
  • What are your hopes / dreams for the future?
