Remote Education provision
Information for parents/carers
This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to students and parents/carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home and when individual students are self-isolating. We have also produced a quick reference guide to our remote learning PE provision which can be found here.
What help documents are available on the school website?

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day of students being sent home?
- The immediate provision for day one will be for students to complete work from their Knowledge Organiser (Look, cover, write check tasks and making flashcards) following the homework timetable for the week so that all tasks are complete.
- If a school bubble has closed, our intention is for our virtual live lesson provision to start from day two.
- If an individual student is isolating, our Heads of Department have produced a self study booklet with links to pre-recorded lessons. This can be accessed a the top of this page.
The remote curriculum: what is taught to students at home?
A student’s first day of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.
If students are in school when we have to send them home, we will make sure they have any subject specific resources for their time at home that will allow them to make the most of their remote learning, for example, subject booklets, copies of texts, graph paper, reference texts. Students should always have their Knowledge Organisers on them but we will remind them of this before they leave school.
Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?
We teach the same curriculum in our virtual live lessons as we do in school. This means that all students will receive the same curriculum regardless of whether we have to send home a partial year group or a whole year group. Our virtual live lessons can be delivered to students at home and in school simultaneously. However, we are not able to deliver core PE lessons remotely, so in place of this we will provide students with a variety of different activities they could undertake and encourage them to complete physical exercise every day (in place of core PE lessons; and for some students the active nature of break/lunchtime.) Some lessons will not be delivered live, for example, KS3 practical lessons, however, work for these subjects will be set on Google Classroom and will follow the same curriculum as would be delivered in school. Just because the nature of delivery is different, the curriculum content is the same.
Accessing remote education - how will my child access any online remote education you are providing?
Our virtual live lessons will be delivered on the MSTeams platform, so students will need to ideally have downloaded the MSteams app onto their device, however, if can also be accessed via browser. The link to the MSteams lesson will be posted in Google Classroom which will also be where students will complete tasks and submit their work. The Google Classroom app is very useful to have on a phone for submitting work. We have produced a number of help guides to support students adapt to online learning which are all available below:

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?
We recognise that some students may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those students to access remote education:
- We have a number of Chromebooks that we are able to lend students and have run a ‘loan’ system during both lockdown periods when schools shut. Parents can request a Chromebook by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. We also regularly run surveys within school on students’ access to IT at home to that we have an up-to-date picture of our students’ needs at all times to ensure we have a sufficient number of devices. It is also possible because of the platforms that we use for students to use their mobile phones to access our remote learning provision, however we recognise that it is much better on a Chromebook.
- We will supply students with dongles if they do not have access to the internet at home. Parents can request a dongle by emailing email@example.com
- If students need printed materials because they are unable to access our online remote learning provision then these can be provided.
- If students are unable to submit work online then they are able to post it into school to their teacher for feedback.
How will my child be taught remotely?
We use a combination of the following approaches to teach students remotely:

Engagement and feedback - what are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents/carers should provide at home?
We have the same expectations of students in terms of attendance and engagement during remote learning as we have of them in school. We would ask all our parents to support their children to be able to meet these expectations and have produced a document entitled ‘How to support your child with their remote learning‘setting out what this support could look like.
My child has forgotten their password or login for Google Classroom. What do they do?
Student email address is in the form firstname.lastname@example.org (where 25 is the year they will finish Year 11). Their password is the same as their school network login password. If the student needs their password re-set then they should email email@example.com
What do we do if the class is not appearing on Google Classroom?
You should double check that your child is signed in with their school account (as above). If their class is still not there, or their class is incorrect, students should contact their class teacher via email: all staff emails are on the school website.
What do we do if there is no Teams Meeting link or independent work set on Google Classroom?
Your child should double check that they are signed in with their school account (as above). If there is no Teams link 10 minutes into the lesson, students should contact their class teacher via email: all staff emails are on the school website.
We cannot hear anything once we have joined a virtual lesson – what can we do?
Check that when your child joined the meeting they clicked the Computer Audio button and the volume on the PC Mic & Speakers is up high. If they didn’t, leave the meeting and rejoin and check these settings.
How do I blur the background when my child is attending a virtual lesson?
Click on the more actions … menu on the top right. Click on Apply Background Effects setting and click on the Blur option.
Can you help me with another issue that is something not addressed above?
If it is subject specific, students should email their teacher using their school email. Please remember that teachers have a full teaching timetable so may not be able to respond instantly, even if it is during the lesson time. As an alternative in the meantime, students should work from their Knowledge Organiser for that subject if they are unable to access the virtual interactive lesson. If it is not subject specific, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will do everything we can to help.
What do we do if there is another technical issue with the device my child is using at home?
We strongly recommend that students use a laptop or Chromebook to access their remote learning. We recommend that laptops and tablets have the Microsoft Teams app installed on them and that students are signed in with their school account (see above). We recommend that students install the Google Classroom app on their phone—this allows easy submission of photographs of written work. There is a guide on the website and it has been emailed home.
Please note: the IT technicians have a limited capacity to support with personal devices due to the different set up and limited control we have over students’ and parents’ personal devices. However, please email email@example.com and we will do everything we can to help.
Remote teaching and study time each day. How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?
Our virtual live lessons follow the normal school timetable, so there will be five hours of live lessons a day (with the exceptions detailed above) for students to attend. They will also have their Knowledge Organiser homework to complete each week following the normal timetable which is included in the front of the Knowledge Organiser booklet. It is possible that some of the tasks set in the practical subjects may require students to spend additional time on them, however, this will be lesson specific and dependent on the task/teacher/year group.
